[The influence of nipples and pacifiers on breastfeeding duration].

* Fac. de Medicina UFMG, Programa de Pós-graduação em Pediatria. As chupetas e bicos são largamente utilizados em vários países, constituindo importante hábito cultural em nosso meio. As chupetas são geralmente usadas para acalmar o bebê e não fornecem alimentação; seu uso pode levar à menor freqüência de amamentar. Com isto, a estimulação do peito e a retirada do leite da mama podem ficar diminuídas, levando à menor produção do leite, cuja conseqüência é levar ao desmame. Além disso, as chupetas como os bicos podem ser nocivos por transmitirem infecções, por reduzirem o tempo gasto sugando no peito e interferir na amamentação, levando ao desmame. Podem também prejudicar a função motora oral, exercendo papel importante na síndrome do respirador bucal, e também levar a problemas ortodônticos provocados pela sucção do bico, que não estimula adequadamente os músculos da boca1-3. Uma grande parte dos profissionais da saúde, assim como leigos e mães, acreditam que as chupetas são inofensivas, ou até mesmo necessárias e benéficas para o desenvolvimento do bebê, tendo uma atitude indiferente ou permissiva.
